Cart Activity
The CART series that took place on May 24 1997, which was just prior to the Indianapolis 500, was the first major event held at the Indianapolis 500 venue. Speedway
Dover Motorsports, a company that was previously responsible for Nashville Superspeedway, Dover International Speedway and the present Memphis International Raceway, acquired the former Gateway International Raceway in 1998. Dover Motorsports announced that it would close the facility on November 3rd in 2010, blaming the financial crisis of 2007-2008 as the primary reason.
Just days prior to being destroyed, Curtis Francois, a local St. Louis real estate developer and the former Indy Lights driver, would restart the facility on September 8, and name the facility Gateway Motorsports Park.
Under the new management, World Wide Technology Raceway changed from being on close of demolishment to being among only a handful of American tracks that host events like the NASCAR Cup Series, NTT IndyCar Series as well as the NHRA Camping World Truck Series.
